The HOOK Army Team – new formation – took on the RAF at Druids Lodge Polo Club on Sunday 6th July.

Cap Matt Ryder was awarded his senior Colours. It was a very close affair BUT the RAF are a tough team to beat as their players play a lot together and having beaten the RN two weeks ago to win the Duke of Yorks Trophy, they were well organised. The first period saw the RAF plunder a fine goal to increase their handicap lead by 1 to 11/2.

The HOOK Army team began to fight back and Drummond-Moray scored an impressive penalty in the second period from 60 yards. However, as is often the case in polo, the 3rd period saw the RAF cement their lead by two quick goals by Whitchurch to lead by 31/2 to no reply. HOOK Army fought back and Ryder scored a fine goal from 1/2 way which was impressive given his first appearance in the senior team. However, the RAF put the after burners on and two quick goal saw them 51/2 to 3 in the final period a brief sense of hope remained as the HOOK Army pushed hard and they did score in the final minute.

The RAF won by 51/2 goals to 4 to clinch the fine Sassoon Cup and complete a rare tri service double by beating both the RN and now the Army.
